Alecia Muirhead (She/Her)

Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant (CDBC) -Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) - Fear Free Certified Animal Trainer (FFCP-Trainer)

I’m a full time dog enthusiast with over 14 years of experience helping dogs and their people thrive. My journey in dog behaviour started with my own mutt, Jack, who inspired me to dive deeper into the world of dog and MUTTLIFE was born! I’ve worked in a variety of settings, from teaching group classes, managing dog daycare, volunteering with rescue groups, providing private coaching, and mentoring other pet professionals. My background equips me with knowledge and skills to help dogs and their people navigate this world together!

I specialize in addressing reactivity and other complex challenges, though my approach goes beyond simply modifying behaviour. I aim to support both ends of the leash—helping guardians feel empowered and confident while providing their dogs with the skills and environment they need to succeed.

Behaviour challenges can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. My goal is to reduce stress for both you and your dog every step of the way. I take a whole-picture approach, considering your dog’s biological, emotional, and social needs while tailoring a plan to help you move forward. We may also collaborate with veterinarians, veterinary behaviourists, or other professionals to ensure your dog’s overall well-being is prioritized.

We can set dogs up for success by teaching valuable life skills and offering choice in their experiences whenever possible. Whether you're addressing complex issues or starting your dog off on the right paw, I meet you and your dog where you are—without judgment—and create a safe space to learn and grow together. I’m here to help dogs and their families live their best lives!

MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY

  • Force Free

I advocate for evidence-based training methods that avoid discomfort, fear, or intimidation. By focusing on positive reinforcement, we create an environment where dogs learn through rewards, not punishment, making training a safe and enjoyable experience for you and your dog.

  • Humane

Training will prioritize your dog’s well-being every step of the way. We avoid any tools or techniques that cause harm or distress. Instead, we focus on learning through positive motivators like food, praise, and play, ensuring each experience builds trust and strengthens the bond between you and your dog, all while going at your dog’s pace.

  • Inclusive

I am dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. I believe in treating all individuals—regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, background, or ability—with respect, kindness, and dignity. Discrimination has no place here. I am committed to providing a safe, supportive space where all people and dogs can thrive, learn, and grow together.

Dogs are creatures of opportunity—they repeat what is rewarding and avoid what is not. High-value food, praise, play, and understanding not only help dogs learn but motivate them to engage with us in meaningful ways.

As the ones guiding every aspect of our dogs’ lives, it’s our responsibility to provide them with choice, enrichment, and outlets for natural behaviours.

This approach goes beyond force-free training and behaviour modification—it’s a lifestyle rooted in mutual communication, trust, and understanding.

Together, we’ll integrate your goals with your dog’s needs to build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship.

Did you know the dog training and behaviour field is unregulated? Unlike professions requiring licenses or certifications, anyone can call themselves a “Dog Trainer” or behaviour expert without formal qualifications. This makes it challenging to identify skilled professionals versus those using outdated or harmful methods.

While certifications are voluntary, many professionals uphold high standards, using science-based, humane techniques. I earned my credentials by passing comprehensive exams, submitting case studies, professional references, and demonstrating practical skills in behaviour modification and coaching. I maintain these credentials through continuing education and adherence to a strict Code of Ethics.

I am committed to progressive, welfare-focused methods, providing safe, effective training while advocating for change and accountability in an industry lacking consistent standards.

Meet the MUTTS

Jack is my Soul Mutt. He is the inspiration behind Muttlife and I wouldn’t be who I am without him. He came to us at 7 months old, having missed out on crucial socialization as a puppy and displayed some challenging behaviours as a result. He is pure mutt with a lineage that has stumped several DNA tests, with the common breeds being Rottweiler, Husky, Mastiff, and Chow Chow.
He has taught me so much about dogs and life- I do my best to return the love ad lessons he gives so freely, but don’t know that I’ll ever be able to match his generosity. He has shared 15 years with us and we treasure each and every remaining day as a bonus!

Miss B" Haven (R.I.P.) was the mutt we didn’t know we needed. She came to our family in 2011 when we agreed to dogsit her for just two weeks. From the moment she arrived, she had more personality than I knew what to do with, always keeping me on my toes. One minute she was a playful clown, and the next, a cuddle bug—perfectly imperfect. A Boston Terrier x English Bulldog mix, she was a true diva, and absolutely adored.

We shared 10 unforgettable years together before she passed away at 13 in 2021. Haven taught us so much about loving and supporting a senior dog through their golden years. Her legacy lives on in my love for smushy-faced, sassy mutts.

I met Dale when he was 3 months old as a client dog. He’s proof that it is NOT “all in how you raise them”. Dale was chosen by a family who did everything they thought was right—they researched breed, selected the "calmest" puppy, and even booked puppy sessions with me before bringing him home. However, we soon realized that the calm demeanor they loved was actually rooted in fear—Dale was terrified of everything. Despite our best efforts to support and socialize him, the family made the tough decision to find a home better equipped to meet his needs.

I offered to help ease their transition by dogsitting, but Jack and Dale quickly became best friends. It didn’t take long for us to realize that Dale had already found his home with us. He has taught me so much about working with fear and related behaviors. While he will always be a tender soul, Dale has made incredible progress in his bravery and life skills!

Lala has a personality as unique as her appearance! She came to us at 11 weeks old, having already faced some scary experiences. She has some fears and concerns about this strange human world, particularly around new situations (people, places, and things), handling and veterinary care. She is really good at communicating her boundaries and comfort level and her confidence continues to grow.  She is the first dog we’ve had as a puppy and gave us the full experience- from pudgy sweetness to full adolescent menace- and we lived to tell the tale! She is our little-big, short- long, bold- suspicious, cuddle bug with the softest fur I’ve ever felt.
